Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of mobile phone usage on students' interest in performing obligatory prayers (shalat) among students of SMP Islam An Nabilah, Gunung Kaler, Tangerang, Banten. Using a quantitative correlational approach, the research examines the relationship between the frequency of mobile phone usage and students’ religious activities. Data were collected through closed questionnaires distributed to 76 respondents selected using simple random sampling from a total population of 756 students. The instrument was validated and tested for reliability using IBM SPSS v.22, and data analysis employed the product-moment correlation technique. The results revealed a significant negative relationship between the intensity of mobile phone usage and students’ interest in worship, particularly in performing shalat, reading the Qur’an, and academic engagement. The coefficient of determination (KD) of 25.4% indicates that a quarter of the decline in students' religious observance is related to excessive mobile phone usage. The findings imply the importance of parental, teacher, and school involvement in monitoring and limiting mobile phone usage while fostering consistent worship habits. A collaborative effort is essential to balance technology use with spiritual responsibilities, aiming to cultivate religious character among students in the digital era.
